WEEK 1
June 3rd-7th

AM ( 9:00 -2:00)
Location:  San Dieguito Park

Survival Skills and Animal Tracking

Tap into your inner warrior through survival skill training and animal tracking. Using hidden clues like animal tracks and scat (poop!), we can investigate a wild animal’s whereabouts… and maybe even see it for ourselves! Not only that- have you ever wondered if you could eat that wild mushroom growing at the park? Wondered how to build a shelter with only sticks and leaves? Wanted to read a map or compass to lead you and your friends to a great, big adventure? Coastal Kiddos will leave you a certified survival expert, with the skills to climb the coolest tree and tie the tightest knot.

Girl with Bow and Arrow

PM (12:00- 5:00)
Location: Torrey Highlands Park

Interconnectedness of Food

It’s easy to forget that the veggies and meat on our plate came from somewhere outside, from a life that took years of resources and energy to grow. The world opens up into a complicated and crazy food web once you look below the surface of our everyday meals… By discovering where our food comes from, what it’s connected to, and what that means for us, Coastal Kiddos believes that we can better understand how humans fit into nature. Through making your own ice cream, learning how to ferment and pickle foods, solar baking and more, kids learn unique cooking skills in a unique outdoor setting. Spend your summer feeding your appetite for delicious discoveries!

Materials Fee: $15

Kids in Vegetable Farm

WEEK 2
June 10th -14th

AM (9:00 -2:00)
Location:  Los Penasquitos Canyon

Magic of the Outdoors

Do you spend your days behind a screen, sitting still for so many hours inside that you just want to scream!? Take a step out your door, drive down the street, join Coastal Kiddos and see the magic you’ll meet. Roll down grassy hills, dip your toes in the creek, find critters in tree-trunk holes, crack acorns wide open. Learn how to find the hidden universes in the dirt, identify plants at first glance, and find fairy homes in the forest. As a camp dedicated to exploring the outdoors, we’ll teach you how to see all the magic in this world.

PM (12:00- 5:00)
Location: San Dieguito Park

Insects and Critters

Are you afraid of spiders, when you find them crawling up your walls? Or maybe you don’t notice them, not even a little bit, not at all… the reality is, no matter where you live, spiders and critters and creepy crawlers exist! Not only that- they’re an important part of a healthy ecosystem, and after a week at our camp you’ll understand why. Fun games are often the best way to learn, so kids will work on big mazes and pretend to walk like ants in order to get a glimpse into the world of creepy crawlies

WEEK 3
June 17th-21st

AM (9:00 -2:00)
Location: Annie's Canyon

Plant Medicine

Tap into the ancient knowledge of native peoples by exploring how plants can be used as medicine. Even the most ordinary plant, that grows between cracks of concrete or by the beach, has the potential to heal. Hand in hand with our survival skill training, learning to use plants as medicine is one of the most important skills when becoming an outstanding outdoorsman. Learn how to make essential oils and tea and dyes, all from the plants growing in your backyard. Make potions from mashed-up plants, find the cure for poison oak… there’s no end to the possibilities when you connect with plants as medicine!

PM (12:00- 5:00)
Location: Scripps Beach

Tide Pooling and Beach Exploration

Maybe you’ve been to the beach before, or even explored the tide pools too… but with Coastal Kiddos, you’ll discover there’s much more to see than you ever knew! Tide pools are some of the most intricate ecosystems, full of wacky ocean animals that survive in the most turbulent part of the ocean. They have some of the wildest adaptations, and are some of the most ancient animals on earth- it’s basically like coming face to face with tiny dinosaurs! Students will learn proper ocean safety through fun games like aquarium building, scavenger hunting and natural boat building. Crab Walk with the crabs, discover the depths of the tide pools and the intricacy of the ocean tides with Coastal Kiddos this summer.

At Coastal Kiddos you’ll use dirt to create masterpieces, collect leaves to craft giant collages, and tap into all the senses to fully appreciate the natural world around you. Not only will you leave the day with memories of adventures spent with friends, but with a deeper connection to nature, and a deeper understanding of how you fit into the complex web of life!

Birding

Through binoculars or in plain sight, spying San Diego’s local bird population is nothing short of magical. Flitting from branch to branch, it’s often hard to know how to identify different species- at Coastal Kiddos, students get the unique opportunity to observe these creatures in their natural habitat. Students will be shown how to sit and observe birds in real-time, as well as guided through making bird nests, bird feeders, and binoculars. By fine-tuning the senses and learning how to tread quietly, not only will you become a birder by the end you might even make some new flying friends.
